Dental Exams & Cleanings

Maintaining regular dental cleanings is one of the most vital parts of your dental care plan. At Cholla Family Dentistry, our dental hygienists take special care to get to know you and your particular hygiene needs during your dental exams. They take pride in serving your dental health with thorough yet gentle cleanings, while educating you about effective habits and techniques that you can – and should – be using between visits.

The Necessity of Regular Dental Cleanings

The American Dental Association recommends dental cleanings generally every six months. These cleanings are instrumental in preventing tooth decay and gum disease, more so than even the best personal dental care practices.

Due to irregularities in patients’ teeth such as crookedness, crowding and gaps,it can be difficult for patients to clean every surface as thoroughly as needed. Tartar buildup commonly advances to the point where professional tools are necessary to remove it before disease sets in.

In cases where disease has occurred or cleanings have been missed, Dr. Chen may recommend more frequent cleanings than every six months. He will work with you to establish the best cleaning schedule for you and your needs.

How do cleanings work at Cholla Family Dentistry?

1. Typically, cleanings begin with an ultrasonic instrument designed to remove tartar, along with water rinsing to flush out residue and keep the mouth at a proper temperature.

2. Our hygienists will use a fine, handheld instrument to remove any tartar left from Step 1 on teeth surfaces and below the gumline.

3. Teeth will undergo a polishing with a device containing a small rubber head, as well as gritty polishing paste. Teeth will emerge smoother, and the mouth will feel refreshed.

4. Our hygienists will discuss improvements for each patient’s home care routines and techniques.
